Having our early morning LUNCH at ministop, emerald yesterday, DJ saw the Virginia Tech Shooting on a newspaper across our table. We were discussing about it just earlier. It brings creepy feeling on me until now. We both agreed racism triggered it.

The news of the Virginia Tech Shooting had me rather upset. I just can't imagine how that college community must be suffering right now. Regardless if you knew anyone involved or not, a university campus is such a community, that I know everyone is affected.

People might pass Facebook and other social networking sites off as passe or whatever, but I've gotta say, I'm pretty amazed at how quickly news travels and communities are formed. Eight hours after the shooting and there's already a facebook group created for remembering the victims of the shooting. The group was not created by anyone at VT and I'm not sure how many people at VT is even a part of it. But within a matter of hours after being created over 9,000 people have joined the group, with over 50 discussion threads and over 1000 wall posts. That's pretty amazing. People grieve and deal with tragedies in their own way. I think that something like this is demonstrative of our generation's use of the Internet. I think that something like this has got to be better than just reading about the event in a newspaper or watching it unfold on TV. But rather people can communicate and discuss it in attempts to make sense of what has happened.

There are also tributes up on Flickr already. It's interesting how new media is being used in innovative and unique ways. When Myspace or Facebook or Photo community sites were first created I doubt anyone could've imagined how they would be utilized and to what extent they would have some very powerful implications. It just fascinates me.

That said, my heart and prayers do go out to all of the Virginia Tech campus and then entire city and state. What a horrible tragedy.
